Authorities in Pima County, Arizona, are conducting an extensive search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC's 'Today' show anchor Savannah Guthrie, who was reported missing from her residence in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood near Tucson.
According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, Nancy Guthrie was last observed at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday evening near her home. The family became increasingly concerned and subsequently alerted law enforcement around midday Sunday by placing a 911 call to report her missing, initiating a search and rescue operation.
While Nancy Guthrie is known to have some physical health challenges, Sheriff Nanos has indicated that she shows no signs of cognitive impairment. Despite this, Sheriff Nanos expressed concern about certain conditions at the scene of her home but refrained from disclosing specific details during a news conference held late Sunday.
The search efforts have mobilized a comprehensive team comprising volunteer search and rescue personnel, K-9 units, border patrol agents, and aerial support via helicopters. Sheriff Nanos emphasized the breadth of the operation, stating, "We’ve pretty much just thrown everything at this as we can." This underscores the urgency and seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.
Detectives from the homicide division have been involved from the outset of the investigation. At this stage, law enforcement has not excluded the possibility of foul play, although no further information regarding this aspect has been disclosed.
An official spokesperson from NBC News affirmed, "We can confirm this is a missing persons case, and the family is working closely with local law enforcement." The family has expressed gratitude for the volumes of outreach, as well as the thoughtful messages and prayers received from the public during this challenging time.
Savannah Guthrie, a prominent figure on NBC's 'Today' program, has previously spoken warmly of her mother and the close bond they share. When Savannah was 21 years old and offered her initial news position in Butte, Montana, Nancy Guthrie was instrumental in encouraging her to embrace the opportunity, despite the geographical distance it involved. Savannah reflected on her mother's support, noting, "It’s not because she didn’t want me to stay. Of course she wanted me to stay, but she’s like, ‘I’m not going to stand in the way of your dreams.’" This highlights the strength of their relationship and suggests the depth of the family's current concern.
Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has attracted significant attention due to her connection to a national news personality. Local authorities continue to pursue all leads and are actively exploring all avenues to ensure her safe return. Meanwhile, the community and law enforcement remain vigilant in their coordinated search and investigation efforts.
