Formation Bio’s strategic application of AI centers on accelerating the administrative and analytical segments surrounding clinical trials. These include patient recruitment, regulatory documentation, and refining drug-to-disease matching efforts. Unlike some expectations, the company does not use AI to shorten the actual treatment period during which patients receive the investigational drug; the focus is on enhancing the efficiency of operational tasks before and after the treatment phase. The result, according to Liu, is the potential to cut trial durations by up to half.

Backed by prominent investors such as Sam Altman and Michael Moritz, Formation Bio pursues a business model that involves acquiring three or four promising drug candidates annually. This approach has yielded tangible success: one drug was sold to Sanofi for €545 million, and another, where Formation held a minority stake, was sold to Eli Lilly for just under $2 billion.
