In southwestern Nigeria, a driver linked to a fatal traffic accident that seriously injured renowned boxer Anthony Joshua and claimed the lives of two of his acquaintances has been charged by police in Ogun state. Identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, aged 46, he faces multiple allegations including dangerous and reckless driving following the incident that unfolded on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.
Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi issued a statement confirming that Kayode was taken into custody on Thursday after his release from medical treatment. Subsequently, he was granted bail amounting to five million Nigerian naira, equivalent to approximately $3,480. The charges enumerate four counts comprising dangerous driving causing death, neglectful and careless driving, operating a vehicle without adequate care, and driving without a valid national driver’s license.
The accident involved a collision with a stationary truck while the trio of passengers, including Anthony Joshua as well as Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, were traveling. Joshua, recognized as a two-time heavyweight boxing champion with familial and early education ties to Nigeria, sustained minor injuries and was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after being medically cleared to recuperate at home. His promoter has confirmed his decision to remain in Nigeria following the incident.
The court proceedings related to Kayode's charges were postponed to January 20, at which point the trial will commence. Authorities indicated that Kayode will be held on remand until he fulfills the stipulated bail conditions.
The incident has brought attention to traffic safety considerations on critical roadways connecting Ogun state to Lagos, raising broader discussions concerning road safety infrastructure and enforcement in the region.
