In the early hours of Monday, Kiefer Sutherland, the British-born Canadian actor famous for his role as Jack Bauer on the Fox television series "24," was arrested by Los Angeles police on suspicion of criminal threats following an incident reported just past midnight.
The authorities responded to a report of an assault at an intersection located slightly south of Hollywood Hills. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers found that Sutherland had entered a ride-hail vehicle and physically assaulted the driver, additionally making verbal criminal threats towards the victim.
The ride-hail driver did not need medical attention after the event, police confirmed. Sutherland was subsequently taken into custody and was released a few hours later upon posting a $50,000 bond, as per jail records. His initial court hearing is scheduled for February 2.
Efforts to obtain a statement from Sutherland's representatives have not yielded a response.
Sutherland has a documented history with alcohol-related legal issues, including a 2007 arrest where he pleaded no contest to a charge of driving under the influence, as well as a prior conviction in 2004 for the same offense. Additional alcohol-related arrests have been on his record intermittently since the 1990s.
In addition to his role in "24," Sutherland's film credits include notable titles such as "The Lost Boys" and "Young Guns," and he has been featured in two films directed by Rob Reiner: "Stand by Me" and "A Few Good Men." He is also the son of acclaimed actor Donald Sutherland.
