Mattel Inc.'s publishing branch is entering the young adult fiction arena with a new title, Barbie: Dreamscape, crafted by bestselling author Alex Aster. The narrative transports the well-known doll into a fantastical adventure spanning dangerous and magical territories. This work represents Mattel Publishing's first young adult novel since establishing the imprint three years ago.
The book is independent from the high-profile 2023 'Barbie' movie and, according to a Mattel spokesperson, there are no current intentions to develop the novel into a film or other screen adaptation.
Mattel describes Barbie: Dreamscape as a coming-of-age saga set in the enchanted environment of Swancrest Academy. At her graduation, Barbie learns she is 'Fateless,' a condition that propels her to undertake a difficult journey across mystical realms. Her mission is to locate enigmatic entities believed to govern the fates of all inhabitants within the kingdom known as Heartland. During this quest, Barbie seeks hidden truths with the potential to transform her world.
The announcement emphasized the thematic core of the narrative: Barbie's resolve to break free from conventional expectations and venture into unknown territories to create her own destiny.
Mattel Publishing concentrates on adapting and expanding its broad portfolio of children’s and family entertainment properties, such as Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Polly Pocket, to new formats. Recently, Mattel also introduced an autistic Barbie doll as part of the diverse and inclusive Fashionistas collection.
Alex Aster, recognized for her best-selling 'Lightlark' series and the adult novel 'Summer in the City,' expressed a personal connection to Barbie dolls. She reflected on childhood afternoons spent crafting stories involving her dolls, recalling the excitement of adding characters and accessories to her imaginative worlds.
