Authorities confirmed that early Monday morning, a man was detained on suspicion of breaking windows and causing property damage at the residence of Vice President JD Vance in Cincinnati, Ohio. The U.S. Secret Service reported the incident took place at the Walnut Hills property located east of downtown.
At approximately midnight, Secret Service agents assigned to provide security at the home heard a loud noise and discovered an individual attempting to gain entry after smashing a window with a hammer. According to law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity, the man had subsequently damaged a Secret Service vehicle while approaching the residence.
The home in Walnut Hills was unoccupied at the time of the incident, with Vice President Vance and his family not present in Ohio. Vance's office indicated that his family has since returned to Washington.
In response to the event, the Secret Service is working in partnership with the Cincinnati Police Department as well as the U.S. attorney’s office to assess potential charges against the detained individual. Agency spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi provided a statement confirming the coordination of efforts is ongoing.
Walnut Hills is recognized as one of Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhoods, notable for several historic landmarks including the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. The local setting is characterized by hilly terrain offering views over the cityscape.
JD Vance, a Republican, served as a U.S. senator representing Ohio prior to assuming the vice presidency. His office deferred questions about the incident to the Secret Service and reiterated the family’s current residence in Washington.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue to gather information regarding the individual's motives and any further charges that may be warranted. At this stage, detailed information about the suspect has not been released to the public.
